Training Tips from Downtown Dogs

Q: How do I deal with on-leash aggression between two dogs?

A: First and foremost, if you are experiencing any problems with on-leash aggression, seek the advice of a Certified Trainer. For the safety of your dog (as well as any unwitting four-legged bystanders) please address this issue as soon as possible. Many owners hope that the problem will resolve itself over time; however, left un-checked most on-leash aggression will escalate - what started as a “bark and lunge” habit can easily turn into a full-scale dog-on-dog attack. In the meantime, here are a few tips that can help while you are working through this problem:

-Safety first! If you know your dog is not going to behave well when meeting other dogs give yourself and your pooch lots of space. Don’t force your dog into an unpleasant experience! The more negative interactions your dog has with other dogs, the more the behaviour becomes re-enforced, making it that much tougher to work through.

-Take a basic obedience course with your dog. A dog that follows your commands is a dog that will give you his/her attention when it counts. Learning to work with your dog will also increase your skills and confidence as his/her handler. Plus, your dog will be learning to work in a safe environment around other dogs- no bad behaviour allowed!

-Practice a non-confrontational behavioural modification program, such as “Nothing In Life is Free”. Living with your dog in this way puts you at the head of the pack; the leader’s word goes! Getting your dog’s respect by being his/her alpha makes it easier for you to control your dog when it counts.

Adoption Profile: Lucy
Lucy is a gorgeous seven-year-old red Shar-Pei who has spent nine months in foster care learning how to be a happy member of her human foster family. She’s ready for her forever home now and would like a family with no other pets and no young children. In spite of years of abandonment alone in her former owner’s backyard, Lucy loves life, has a great sense of humour, and is a warm, affectionate dog with those she knows. She is well-mannered around the house, rides perfectly in the car, and loves to go everywhere with her people. She doesn’t mind staying at home on her own sometimes, but the best part is her happy dance when her people return!  Read more about Lucy...
Bake-Off for Bunnies on Sunday, June 7th
Bake your best cookies, bars and pastries to help raise funds for bunnies at the RAPS Shelters

Richmond has a lot of homeless rabbits and 40+ of them are waiting for adoption at the Richmond Animal Shelter!  RAPS needs your help to raise money to repair their cages and spay/neuter the rabbits before they can be adopted.  Join us for the RAPS Bake-off for Bunnies.  Sign up to bring your best cookies, candies, or pastries for an afternoon bake sale.  Prizes will be awarded in a number of baking categories. Please email RAPS at newsletter@rapsociety.com to RSVP for the contest and to ensure we have enough space for everyone!  This event will include education on bunnies, responsible bunny ownership, and ways you can help stop the rabbit overpopulation problem in Richmond. This event is open to the public. If you are baking for this event, please remember to invite your friends and family.  Thanks for helping the RAPS bunnies.
Mainland Animal Emergency Clinic Saves RAPS' Precious Friends
Surrey Animal ER cares for RAPS' overnight patients.

When Carol, the RAPS' Executive Director and Shelter Manager, finds an animal in distress, Mainland Animal Emergency Clinic is there to help throughout the night.  While RAPS has a wonderful, dedicated veterinarian caring for many of the shelter animals, when after hours emergencies happen, RAPS depends on the Mainland Clinic to 'save-the-night'.  RAPS would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and staff at Mainland for making it possible for shelter animals to have overnight care.

Where do all those cats come from?  by Marianne Moore
The most commonly asked question by visitors to RAPS’ cat sanctuary is “Where do all these cats come from?”

There are about 900 felines at the sanctuary, so it’s hardly surprising that people would ask that.  Each year a few cats arrive at the sanctuary in a completely unique and unexpected way, but most were either strays, abandoned, or surrendered by their owners.   Here are some examples:

Cecilia was one of ten cats trapped at an industrial site. Site employees had seen cats wandering around at the far end of their rural property and contacted RAPS.  Although they’re not often seen by passers-by, there are many such cat colonies living “wild” in empty lots, under buildings or in back alleys all over the city. Some have lived like this their entire lives, born to stray cats or abandoned as kittens themselves. Many have never had contact with humans and behave as you would expect a wild animal to behave when trapped – hissing, spitting, and trying to attack their rescuers, whom they perceive as a threat. It didn’t take very long for Cecilia to become a friendly and trusting cat – most likely, she was once a family pet who had been abandoned by her owners – but most cats in such trapped groups never become tame.  Jasmine never has. Although this pretty girl is now less likely to run away and hide from us, she’s never let anyone touch her.

P.J. just showed up in someone’s back yard one day.  The kind home owners put food and water out  for him and tried to befriend him, but he was having none of that.  With the assistance of RAPS trappers, P.J. was brought to the cat sanctuary where he eventually settled in quite happily.  Like Cecilia, he had most likely been abandoned by his former owners.

As heartless as abandoning a cat outdoors may sound... Read more by clicking here.

DNA-My-Dog Day and Bull Breed Awareness Day were a Barking Success!
Participants are encouraged to email their results.

Fun was had by all at RAPS' first DNA My Dog Day on Sunday, April 3rd, at the Richmond Animal Shelter.  Well over 80 dogs and their human friends attended the event, which was made possible by some very dedicated volunteers including Josh, Shelley, Tracey, Geri, Mary, Sonya, Helen, and Christine!  We are so grateful for their help and their bravery in getting DNA swab samples from the dogs!  You guys rock!   See pictures from DNA-My-Dog Day.

If your dog was tested using a DNA kit from RAPS, email us the results with a picture of your dog!  We'll post results on our website for all to enjoy!  Thanks for supporting RAPS through this fundraiser.  Also, if you would like to get a DNA test for your dog, kits are still available at the RAPS City Shelter.

Also, check out the wonderful pictures from Bull Breed Awareness Day by clicking here.  A big 'Thank you' to our friends at Bully Buddies and Hug-A-Bull for providing information and education for the day.  And a special thanks to our photographer, Tracey, for her excellent work.

Foster Grandmother Update
by Margaret Leathley

Margaret and her husband fostered a pregnant cat while it gave birth.   This is an update on those precious cats.

dixieOur time as foster parents ended on April 9th when we took Dixie and her baby, Taz, back to the shelter to be adopted.  Our old cat just wasn’t adapting to having them around, and since she is our baby, she needed to come first.  We knew this might happen.  Still I wasn’t prepared to given them up.

Taz was not a happy camper after being taken from her home to a cage with lots of noise and faces around.  She hissed and cried and would not let anyone near her.  Read more about Taz.

RAPS Declares a Dogs' Bill of Rights
It wasn't signed with paw prints or written on one hundred-year-old parchment, but RAPS has recently released a Dog's Bill of Rights to help dog owners learn the basics of dog care.  Check out this document on our website, which is now available in both English and Chinese.  Consider printing a copy and sharing it with friends who might need a refresher course in the care of dogs.
Tails from the Road
by Shane Burnham

The varied duties of a RAPS Animal Control Officer makes for some interesting stories.  Here are just a few.

April 2/09 --  Report of a unconfined pitbull tethered in the owner's front yard. Officer Burnham attended with two City Bylaws Officers to speak to the owner. The owner was informed of City Bylaws requiring pitbulls to be confined in a six-sided enclosure when outside. The owner complied and brought the dog inside. Pitbulls are considered dangerous dogs in Richmond and are subject to strict bylaws. The fine for an unconfined dangerous dog is $500.

April 7/09 --  Report of a stray rooster running around Minoru Park. Officer Burnham attended and found some kids holding the rooster. The rooster had sustained a minor injury but is now healed and awaiting a new home at the shelter.

Apr 18/09 --  Report of a dog in a hot vehicle at the top of a parkade. Officer Kilborn attended and observed a small dog in a vehicle with all the windows up. The dog was panting and the windows were very warm to the touch. A short time thereafter the owner showed up. Kilborn issued the owner a ticket for inadequate ventilation.

April 23/09 --  A man reported that his dog was attacked by another while at an off leash park, sustaining severe injuries. Officer Burnham met with the owner of the attacking dog and issued the owner two tickets for the offence. The case is now pending with City Bylaws and the dog may be deemed dangerous.
