Richmond Animal Protection Society

Welcome!

Richmond Animal Protection Society (RAPS) is a registered charity that operates two shelters in the City of Richmond, British Columbia. Our first shelter, on No. 6 Road in Richmond, is North America's largest cat sanctuary. At this shelter homeless and abandoned cats and kittens are rescued and cared for. Most of these beautiful animals would have otherwise faced starvation, injury, disease and an early death due to the many hazards in their environment. The cat sanctuary is currently home to more than 800 animals. Read about the Sanctuary Cats on the Neko Blog!

Our second shelter is the City of Richmond Animal Shelter, which we have operated since February 2007. In 2006, RAPS bid for and was awarded the city contract to take over operation of this shelter. By expanding to a second facility, RAPS now cares for a wider variety of animals including dogs, cats, rabbits and other small domestic animals. In addition, the RAPS City Shelter runs a comprehensive adoption program to find the animals at this facility a safe and loving home.

Help reduce the number of homeless cats in our city by spaying or neuter your cat, encouraging others to do the same and donating to help spay/neuter feral and homeless cats. Low-income residents of Richmond, as well as the general public, can contact RAPS for low-cost spay or neuter surgeries of their cat or cats. Using this program, RAPS will arrange to have your cat spayed or neutered, and you pay a portion of the cost. The City of Richmond bylaw requires that cats must be spayed or neutered. New Agility Course at RAPS
Come by and see our newest addition to RAPS... an agility course in our front yard! The primary goal of this agility course will be to help our long term shelter dogs build confidence and get into shape! Being that we are a no-kill shelter we have many dogs that have to wait months and months for their new home. During this time we would like to make their stay at RAPS as enjoyable and stress-free as possible! In addition to this, they will learn how fun it can be to build a trusting relationship with people. Currently we have an A frame, a tire jump, a dog walk, a pause box, hurdles and weave poles. We still need more obstacles to create a fabulous course for our dogs, and we are asking the public for donations to help us reach our goal of $2000 to buy the equipment. It's easy to donate - choose our online option, mail in a cheque, or come visit us at the shelter! We would also like this course to be available to the public. Keep your eyes open for agility classes starting up on the weekends this summer!

DNA My Dog Kits Available at the Richmond Animal Shelter
Do you wonder what kind of dog you have? If so, pick up a DNA My Dog kit at the Richmond Animal Shelter. These kits instruct you on how to get a DNA sample from your dog to find out his or her breed combination. (Don't worry! It's easy and painless!) The kit and processing costs about $60.00 plus GST+shipping. (This is the same cost as if you purchased the kit from the company, DNA-My-Dog). DNA-My-Dog will donate the proceeds towards the care of shelter dogs with special medical needs. Also, after you get your results, send us an email and picture of your dog and let us know what kind of dog he or she is. Kits are available for a $10 donation to RAPS (which is included in the $60.00 plus GST+shipping). The remainder of the cost is paid directly to DNA-My-Dog.
