Sedona

When crack addicts vacated a house in Richmond, a little cat and her newborn kittens were left behind. Sedona and her 3-day-old babies were discovered in the insulation of a ceiling in the house. They were brought to our sanctuary and occupied the maternity ward of our kitten house for the next 8 weeks, until the little ones were ready for adoption ...

Richmond Animal Protection Society built and operates North America's largest cat sanctuary in order to rescue and protect homeless and abandoned cats and kittens.

Located in Richmond, British Columbia, the sanctuary shelters hundreds of animals that have been removed from city streets where they faced starvation, injury, disease and a shortened life due to the many hazards in their environment.

The cat sanctuary provides a safe permanent home to more than 800 animals. Although most come from the city of Richmond, RAPS has also taken in cats and kittens from throughout the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, in order to save them from euthanasia in their home community.

The facility is maintained primarily by a large number of dedicated volunteers who have succeeded in creating a loving, comfortable and stimulating environment that is truly a home for the animals. The cats' health is monitored by a highly specialized team of animal care workers who have been trained to handle and medicate feral cats, and who work closely with local veterinarians. RAPS believes that every life is a valuable life and spares no expense in ensuring that the cats receive high-quality care throughout their lifetimes.

Open to the public every Sunday, the RAPS cat sanctuary is a favorite spot for visitors who are encouraged to bring treats and make their laps available from 1-4:00 p.m.

Shelter Cat of the Month
Lucky

This gorgeous boy is an example of the thousands of feral cats that are hiding in every community.

Lucky and his sibling were rescued from an industrial area as young adults, and brought to our sanctuary. Although he still doesn't welcome our touch, he is completely comfortable with his new life and allows us to be close to him.

Sponsor a Cat

The Richmond Animal Protection Society has a sponsorship program designed to help provide the cats at the shelter with loving care.

For $15 per month, you can help to ensure that one of our precious cats is well-nourished.

As a sponsor, you will receive a photo of your cat and, if you live in our area, are welcome to visit your kitty as often as you'd like. The cats all need love and attention, and always appreciate company.

Late Summer Babies

Two feral females in the late stages of pregnancy were trapped and brought into our shelter to await the birth of their babies. In mid-September, both gave birth-- one in the maternity room of our new kitten house; the other in a quiet, secure shed.
